Hello Stephan,
Interesting article.
Not surprising that we too often forget motivation because too often we forget that we are working with PEOPLE and not just numbers in census or labour cost tables of an excel sheet.

people are just like us, they appreciate we recognise the work, the efforts they do more specially in very difficult situation.
It is time to rehabilitate the H of HR which is to often forgotten in the profit ofthe R part.

But this is just old good sense…..

Hi Stephan,
I love the title of Lencioni's article "No Cost Ways to Motivate". In my experience nearly all of the motivation I have ever experienced at work was produced by the leader's actions and communication and didn't cost anything.

Just have to go back to the original text "First break all the rules". All you have to do to build a high performing team is CARE and show it. Did you tell your team you appreciate their efforts this week? If not ... this is a missed opportunity for motivation and trust and respect.

"Good Job"
"I appreciated it when you .... "
"Thanks for stepping up and ... "
"I really appreciate your positive attitude when ..."

My two cents,

Dike

Hello Stefan,

Very often, for people to be simple it is the most difficult requirement and also very often they fear being simple! They fear because very often the guy that is the leading position cannot articulate a vision and then get them passionate about making it happen.

In this world, the only way that I can get you do anything is by giving you what you want! Of course, you can make someone to give his cooperation, until your back is turned, by threatening to fire him. But this crude method has sharply undesirable repercussion.

The question is: what do you want?

John Dewey, one of America’s most profound philosophers, said that the deepest urge in human nature is :” the desire to be important” (it is significant)
Lincoln said : “Everybody likes a compliment”
William James said :”The deepest principle in a human nature is the craving to be appreciated”

Very often managers forget how to make the others feel important, forget how to give honest and sincere appreciation regarding their progression and finally are not able / doesn’t know how to make others dream about their vision( “If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery )

From the leadership point of view I consider the ability to arouse enthusiasm among people, the great asset that a leader should possess, and I think that the best way to make people spread their wings is by appreciation and encouragement!

Like J Welch , I think that:

"The first essential trait of leadership is positive energy the capacity to go-go-go with healthy vigor and an upbeat attitude through good times and bad"

"The second is the ability to energize others, releasing their positive energy, to take any hell"

"The third trait is edge the ability to make tough calls, to say yes or no, not maybe"

"The fourth trait is the talent to execute very simple, get things done"

"Fifth and finally, leaders have PASSION. They care deeply"

Because passion should live here! Heart is what drives us and determine our fate. That is what we need to have, more than luck and knowledge! We need to become interesting characters: mavericks, adventurers, outsiders and rebels, who ask questions, bend the rules and take risks!

This is the only way to became remarkable!

Nice people with common sense do not make interesting characters!

As a conclusion I added Henry Ford famous quote:” If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person's point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own”

Thanks for listening,

Viorel

PS Sorry for the possible mistakes ;) and I hope I didn't get anyone upset about what I've wrote
