My new book, The Open Innovation Revolution is picking up lots of interest and good reviews.

You can check out my thoughts and ideas on 15inno.com and then we can tailor the session or talk to your needs.

All I ask for is that I can blog about the insights I gain from this experience and that you cover my travel costs (my base is Copenhagen, Denmark).

Let me know if this is of interest to you. My e-mail is: stefanlindegaard@me.com

Building Corporate Innovation Capability: Great Initiative from Statkraft

I have been invited to work with Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy company on their Innovation Agent Programme. This is the second year, I am involved in this programme and I am quite impressed by their efforts.

A key goal of the programme is to increase Statkraft’s innovation capability. This is partly measured by how many business units are engaged in defined innovation activities. The main objective is that every business unit should have innovation activities by the end of 2010.

Hopefully, I will get some opportunities to blog more about their initiatives as my sessions take place in the fall, but until then you should take a look at this brochure that their innovation department has developed.

Big Risk, Big Rewards with Business Model Innovation

There is a lot of talk about business model innovation these days. Psion, the maker of mobile handheld computers has joined in and they aim high.

They want to no less than revolutionize the rugged mobile computing market with its move to an open innovation business model in which Psion will co-create mobile hardware, software and services, bringing together customers, partners and developers within the Psion eco-system. They call this approach for “Open Source Mobility”.

Psion has set some very ambitious objectives for this initiative. One is to dramatically reduce customer’s total cost of ownership and do this 30-50% better than their competitors over a five to ten year span.

Such ambitious objectives are not unusual when companies began to work with business...

Innovation Is All About Behaviors

I just read an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal on how the video game industry prepares to launch new technology-based developments such as new motion-based controllers.

In the article, we are told that one of the biggest challenges for the video game industry is the rise of free or cheap games on mobile phones and social networks. Consumers have changed their behaviors.

This is a common, simple, yet crucial observation that many people working with innovation often tend to overlook. Companies can deliver all the latest technologies and the coolest products, but it does not really matter if we do not make this work together with new business models that adapts to the changes of consumers and customers.

Fast, Open and Global – The Future of Innovation

Innovation might seem a bit foggy at times, but I have a pretty clear vision that the future for this increasingly important discipline will be build on three key elements; Fast, Open and Global.

If you follow my blog, then you know I have a strong focus on open innovation. This is one of the key elements, but it cannot stand by itself. Companies must bring the open approach into a fast and global perspective.

I give a brief explanation on the elements below, but first let me share why I write this post. I simply find the combination intriguing and I want to look further into this, write about it on my blog and share my findings through LinkedIn and Twitter. Hopefully, this will...

Open Innovation Conferences Worth Checking Out

I participated in the inaugural Open Innovation Summit (OI Summit) last year and I look forward to the next one that takes place in Chicago on August 11-13.

Besides the presentations, I look forward to the focused sessions on Asian and European insights on open innovation and the OI Summit Think Tank where I will work with senior level executives to define the qualities of open innovation leadership and how to repeat success. You can read further here: Open Innovation Summit

Are you interested in the intersection of open source and open innovation? Personally, I find this to be quite interesting and thus I was delighted when I was invited to chair the Open Innovation track of the Open World Forum, which takes...

Who’s Your Target? – Building Open Innovation Communities

by Stefan Lindegaard

When I began working with Psion on their open innovation community, Ingenuity Working, one of my first points of criticism was that the site should improve. Not much of a surprise as this is still a beta-version in its early stages.

However, take a look at the site and ask yourself these questions: Why should I spend time on the site? What can I get out of this? Psion can definitely do a better job of stating their target group and explain what these people can expect to get out of it.

I have seen lots of interesting thoughts on the project, so I am confident it will be worthwhile to join the community – if you are interested in the...

The CFO and Innovation: Can It Work?

June 17, 2010 Innovation 11 Comments
by Stefan Lindegaard

I ask whether CFO’s can make innovation happen, but in reality this should not even be a question of whether it can be done but rather a question of how to do it.

The reason for turning this into a how-to question is the increasing role of the CFO in many companies. Their influence keeps growing and this includes influence on innovation and in particular on the funding that goes to innovation.

The problem is that these executives often have a hard time understanding innovation as this discipline is full of risk and uncertainty, which is somewhat different from their corporate world.

I have no clear-cut answers on how to make this work, but let me share some thoughts and hopefully others can join in...

Live Case: How to Build an Open Innovation Community

by Stefan Lindegaard

I have just begun working with Psion, a pioneer in mobile handheld computers for industrial and commercial markets.

As Psion is working to develop a new business model, they have launched Ingenuity Working, its new, online community to bring its developers, partners and customers closer together in order to:

- co-develop the next generation of industrial mobile devices

- share and leverage Psion’s significant IP portfolio with a wide range of vendors and component suppliers

- accelerate a fuller, and uniquely open, dialogue with its global customer and reseller community.

I will help them develop Ingenuity Working and what I really like about this assignment is that John Conoley, (CEO), Nick Eades (Chief Marketing Officer) and Todd Boone (Director, Corporate Communications) and myself...
