Creating Win-Win Situations in Open Innovation
I recently asked Chris Thoen, Managing Director of the Global Open Innovation office at P&G this question.
What are the key elements needed to create win-win situations?
Chris replied by saying that “there are a number of elements that are critical in building a successful innovation partnership, but the key is for everyone to be the partner they’re looking for.” Chris also added these bullet points:
• Celebrate success.
• Don’t think in terms of one-off deals
• Unless win-win is the mentality, there are no wins in the long run.
• Grow the total pie versus growing your piece of the pie.
• Facilitate connections with others. If your partnership doesn’t work on this innovation, help think of where it might work with someone else.
• Be up front, transparent.
It is hard to disagree with Chris on this : – ) What would you add to the list?

Hi Stefan,
very interesting the list and the topic. I would like to add that partners should share ideas that they have along the cooperation project with other partners. In a collaborative environment partners have the oportunity to enrich ideas with others, and open innovation environments are the right place to do it. For sure this could be included in the "Be transparent" point but I think it is important to remark this issue related to the ideas.
