Communication: A Key Innovation Enabler at General Mills

September 6, 2012 15inno No Comments

If you are working with open innovation initiatives, there is a good chance that you have been inspired by the G-WIN program at General Mills.

It might have been through the writings of Jeff Bellairs, who is the Sr.Director of Connected Innovation and responsible for the creation of the General Mills Worldwide Innovation Network (G-WIN).

He writes occassionally on the Taste of General Mills blog and he also shares his insights in industry magazines giving advice on how to set up an open innovation program.

I encourage Jeff Bellairs to not only continue, but even step up these communication efforts as this can bring great value to their open innovation program.

More talk and buzz about G-WIN will help bring in more – and better – partners and it will help the innovation team tear down internal obstabcles. If you read about successful work done by colleagues, you are more likely to be positive, when the innovation team asks for your involvement and contribution.

I am sure Jeff Bellairs already knows this. His key challenge is to find the time to make it happen. Hopefully, we will see Jeff Bellairs write even more and get even more active with social media including his Twitter account.

Besides being more active, Jeff Bellairs also need to involve more people in order to take this to the next level. This could be internal innovation people such as Jeff’s boss, Peter Erickson, as well as external contributors from their innovation networks.

Although there is room for improvement for Jeff Bellairs and his team, they are still further ahead than almost any other corporate innovation unit than I know of. So keep up the good work!

To the rest of you: When will you get serious about your communication efforts?
