Thanks for this post; its really thought provocating..I'd like to share a personal experience also which might give a different perspective on this topic. Recently, our site http :www.roundonejobs.com took a serious call to think radically within ourselves and ignore competition. We forced ourselves to relook at the way people searching for jobs and wanting to enhance careers would want to be told about how we can help them..I think in startups, being unpredictable internally is equally imp as looking outside and doing things different.
