Innovation as a Career Choice

Do you want to work with innovation? Or do you already work with innovation and like this so much that you want to build you career on this?

I am working on a short and sharp webinar in which I share my views on what it takes to get to work with innovation today and how you can stay sharp in a fast moving business discipline that is getting more and more respect among the top executives.

It would be great to get you input on what to include in such a webinar so I am asking you for questions that you would me to address. As a discussion starter, I have listed some potential topics for the webinar below:

• What you need to get into the game: What are the skills, toolbox and mindset that companies are looking for today and what they will need in the coming years? There is a difference in how companies innovate today and how this will change as more and more industries adopt open innovation practices and start focusing just as much on business models as they do no technology and products. This also changes what they need from their people.

• Stay sharp and relevant once you are in the game: Things move fast and you need to stay relevant and sharp. I share some ideas on how you can build your personal brand while adding value to your team and organization. Networking and communication efforts are key here.

• Career paths for corporate innovators: What will your career look like once you have landed a good job as a corporate innovator? There are different career paths once you get into this game including the intrapreneur (building businesses within the company, the innovation leader, a general executive or entrepreneur (you leave to do your own startup).

Hopefully, this post will also give you some inspiration on how to assess your current options for getting to work with corporate innovation and how to move forward if you are already in that position.

    Regarding the career paths, I would also suggest "Innovation Advisor". That's my title at a large Canadian financial institution. My responsibilities include working on a centralized idea web repository, building internal creativity workshops and organizing inspiring conferences with internal and external speakers.

    My experience is that companies seldom actively recruit open innovation specialists. If you search for “open innovation” in large job databases like LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, Mercuri or FreeJobAlert the search result is almost always zero. An open innovation specialist is simply something you become on your own initiative within other roles in the company. In the future I would like the open innovation specialist to become a more acknowledged profession, but I don’t know how. Perhaps something to discuss?
